2nd South Asian Geosciences Student Conference (SAGSC) 2016 – Event Summary

   The 2nd SAGSC 2016 was held on August 22nd – 27th 2016 by Society of Exploration Geophysicists Universitas Gadjah Mada Student Chapter (SEG UGM SC) and Himpunan Mahasiswa Geofisika Universitas Gadjah Mada (HMGF UGM). The event itself consists of eight sub-events, they are Conference, Exhibition Competition, Grand Ceremonies, GeoBowl, City Tour, Field Trip, and Lectures.

   2nd SAGSC 2016 is a forum where geosciences students from various field of study may interact with each other and share their knowledge and ideas for a better future. By participating in 2nd SAGSC 2016, it means that, as geosciences students, the participants have already start their movement to become the part of a great change in the future, where we, geosciences students will be able to strengthen the geosciences itself, which will eventually lead us to a better tomorrow.

   The main event of 2nd SAGSC 2016 was held in University Club Hotel, Universitas Gadjah Mada. It was opened by an opening ceremony which was held on the first day (August 22nd 2016) and was closed by a closing ceremony, gala dinner, and winner announcement on the third day (August 24th 2016). This year, 2nd SAGSC 2016 received about 194 abstracts coming from many countries around Asian continent. After getting reviewed by our peer-reviewers, we selected 85 papers to be presented in the conference which comprise of 50 oral presentations and 35 poster presentations that will be divided into several sessions. We also took note of 20 best that were presented here, which consist of 12 papers from the oral session (taken from each oral session) and also 8 papers from the poster presentation to be considered as the best papers. Even though this event was held in Indonesia, the best paper from the oral and poster presentation came from the students of National Central University, Taiwan. Congratulations to them for beating the host country of this event!

   Even though the main interest for 2nd SAGSC 2016 lies within its conference, we also hold several student competitions and a student exhibition. Those sub-events were hold to increase the euphoria of the events held in 2nd SAGSC 2016. These student competitions consist of photography competition, essay competition, and GeoBowl. The biggest interest in these student competitions lies with the GeoBowl, a smart competition which was designed to test the students’ knowledge and also ability to compete in several matches in order to see which team that can be considered as the best one. The winners for this event came from Universitas Gadjah Mada (1st place) and Institut Teknologi Bandung (2nd and 3rd places).

   After journeying the three days conference, our participants were entertained by the field trip to Merapi volcano (for those who wanted to feel the adrenaline of a real adventure) and also a city tour to several tourism spots on Jogjakarta (for those who wanted to know the Javanese culture). After having one day break from the activities of the past four days, 2nd SAGSC 2016 was continued by one seminar and two workshops which were delivered by selected professionals from the energy industry to, again, increase the participants’ knowledge about geosciences itself.

   The total participants for this event were 628 persons, which consists of the authors, participants from the conference, GeoBowl, student competition, student expo, seminar, and workshop, with several additional amounts of participants coming from our committees themselves. Compared to other student conference around this region, 2nd SAGSC 2016 can be considered as one of the biggest student conference ever held on this region because of the amount of the participants.

The SEG – Joint Field Camp 2016 Project is coming to Srebrna Góra soon!

This joint project is going to be held with the cooperation with two chapters : SEG Student Chapter Cracow and SEG Student Chapter Bucharest. Field Camp, which will take place in September 19-25, entitled “Searching for hidden treasures – Student’s Geophysical Quest” will be an unique opportunity of a multidisciplinary and multicultural experience.

A group of 30 students from Poland, Romania, Italy, Ukraine and Croatia will actively be involved in geophysical field trainings, cooperating with experienced teachers and researchers from two different universities as well as the professionals from the Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute. The Field Camp will be carried out in a relatively restricted area, located close to the border between Poland and Czech Republic.

Associated with a very rich historical background, Kotlina Kłodzka is best known for its underground
buried buildings like abandoned mine shafts that are ready to be discovered.

Students participating in a Field Camp will have a chance to gain new experience both in solving field cases and field work. We are planning to use different types of geophysical surveys. We would like to present student to several geophysical methods :
– Electrical Resisitivity Tomography and Electromagnetic Conductivity Meters surveys which are used in archaeological geophysics and for shallow geology prospection;
– GPR – a method which allow us to show students how ground penetrating radar works in searching for crypts in old churches.

One of the most important aspects of Field Camp for the society members is the practical implementation of the theoretical knowledge during field measurements and further processing and interpretation of collected data.

It is the second event of its kind in South Asia and SEG UGM-SC is trusted to be the host for this event. The event is managed to provide various technical and non-technical activities in the 4-Days conference. There will be Grand Ceremony, Exhibition, Lecture, Conference, Competition, Geo Bowl, Field Trip and City Tour.

This event is widely open for geoscience students who want to focus on crossing the boundaries between all of the geoscience branches such as Oil & Gas, Geophysics, Near-Surface, and general Geology so they are able to share and furnish their ideas and curiosity while interacting with the experts, sharing knowledge, making relations also network, and many more. Innovate Integrate Motivate

This year another contentwise valuable event took place. It was organized by young, developing and determined people to bring together world-class specialists in geology and geophysics, who are really keen to share their knowledge with students from all around the world. From 11-14 of July 2016 they were attending 7th International Geosciences Student Conference in Katowice.

During the conference participants might join in lectures and workshops conducted by world-famous scientists and industry specialists. For young students it was a great opportunity to gain one of the most valuable experiences during their academic years. The accompanied trips (Szczawnica field trip, Jurassic field trip and coal mine sightseeing) was also a nice accent and valuable in geological sense experience.

This year’s IGSC motto was “Innovate, Integrate, Motivate”. Themes was various, which confirms the wide spectrum of presented abstracts: geology, geophysics, oil&gas, polar and environmental studies.

Zakończenie III edycji programu GeoTalent

 

16 warsztatów specjalistycznych, 3 warsztaty miękkie, Program Praktyk Letnich, Konkursy GeoTalent i GeoTurniej 2.0 – to tylko niektóre z wydarzeń w ramach trzeciej edycji GeoTalent, którego finał odbył się 13 czerwca w Gorlicach pod Krakowem. Dzięki Programowi Edukacyjnemu PGNiG studenci uczelni partnerskich już po raz trzeci skorzystali z wiedzy Mentorów, biorąc udział w szkoleniach i konkursach związanych z branżą poszukiwawczo-wydobywczą gazu ziemnego i ropy naftowej.

Program od trzech lat ma na celu poszerzenie wiedzy i praktycznych umiejętności studentów Akademii Górniczo-Hutniczej w Krakowie, Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu oraz Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego, jak również otwarcie organizacji na utalentowanych młodych ludzi. Tegoroczna edycja, realizowana w trakcie całego roku akademickiego 2015/2016, pozwoliła bliżej przyjrzeć się potrzebom studentów i odpowiedzieć na ich potrzeby edukacyjne. Mieli oni okazję zwiedzić Ratowniczą Stację Górnictwa Otworowego w Krakowie i zapoznać się przy tym z działalnością tego Oddziału PGNiG. Innym wyjazdem rozwijającym zainteresowania studentów związane z branżą była wizyta w Skansenie Przemysłu Naftowego „Magdalena” w Gorlicach.

Ambasadorzy GeoTalent obok stałych elementów Programu zaangażowali się w organizację wyjazdu barbórkowego, podczas którego odwiedzili w okolicach Poznania: Rezerwat „Meteoryt Morasko”, Muzeum Ziemi UAM oraz muzeum Arkadego Fiedlera. Ponadto, po raz drugi, poprowadzili drużynowy konkurs wiedzy – ich autorski pomysł, który zrealizowali w ubiegłym roku. GeoTurniej 2.0 cieszył się dużym zainteresowaniem wśród wszystkich trzech uczelni partnerskich. Podobnie jak inne działania programowe, o których Ambasadorzy i Mentorzy opowiadali studentom podczas tegorocznych Targów Organizacji Studenckich na AGH oraz EXPO „Odkop swoją przyszłość” na UW.
Przedsięwzięcie organizowane przez PGNiG z roku na rok zyskuje coraz większy rozmach. Kierownik Programu GeoTalent, Anna Gołębiowska z Departamentu Strategii PGNiG podsumowuje – Kolejna zakończona edycja Programu GeoTalent utwierdza nas w przekonaniu, jak cenną wiedzą nasi Mentorzy dzielą się ze studentami. Uczestnicy Programu z chęcią zgłaszają się do wszelkich inicjatyw, począwszy od warsztatów, wyjazdów edukacyjnych, aż po konkursy, w których mają szansę sprawdzenia swojej wiedzy z zakresu branży poszukiwawczo-wydobywczej gazu ziemnego i ropy naftowe oraz rozwijania swoich umiejętności miękkich.

Od lipca studenci i absolwenci wydziałów docelowych GeoTalent uczestniczą w Programie Praktyk Letnich. Spośród niemal 300 aplikacji, kilkudziesięciu najzdolniejszych studentów zostało wybranych do zdobycia praktycznych kompetencji pod okiem opiekunów z PGNiG. Praktyki są płatne, a ich czas trwania wynosi od miesiąca do trzech .
III edycja Programu GeoTalent dobiegła już końca, warto jednak śledzić kolejne działania, zaplanowane na przyszły rok akademicki. W wakacje ruszy konkurs fotograficzny na Facebooku, zaś jesienią odbędą się kolejne warsztaty specjalistyczne rozwijające kompetencje w branży oil&gas.

The Student Technical Conference 2016 will be held on 3rd and 4th of November, once more in the oil museum in one of the birthplaces of global oil drilling in Wietze near Celle. Format will be similar as in previous years, with lectures, poster presentations, keynote, YP panel, and company booths.

   The Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering, together with the University of Zagreb SPE Student Chapter was host to The 3rd Annual Student Energy Conference, held from March 9th to 12th, 2016. The extensive Conference program was divided into three days of lectures and trainings held by students and distinguished guests from Croatia and several other countries. The fourth day of the program was reserved for establishing connections and building new friendships among students through team building activities.

   On the day of the opening ceremony, the introductory speech was given by the President of SPE Student Chapter Croatia, Mr. Mario Jukic. Also, a warm welcome to all participants was wished by the former Chapter’s President, Mr. Filip Krunic, the Faculty’s dean, Mr. Zoran Nakic and the President of SPE Croatian Section, Mr. Vladislav Brkic. The opening Ceremony was embelished by the SPE Student Chapter’s Men Choir which performed several traditional Croatian ballads. The choir’s performance was met by great enthusiasm and applause from the audience.

The opening ceremony was followed by, according to students’ opinion, the most interesting part of Conference program, which was panel discussion on the topic “Exploration activities in Adriatic Sea, Yes or No?”. The discussion was encouraged by topics ranging from geophysical explorations, drilling activities, field development, production optimization issues, transportation and gathering and HSE topics to geopolitical analysis on current situation in oil and gas industry. Along with these topics, the Conference welcomed presenters with topics on Geothermal Energy Recovery as an alternative and ecologically provable energy source, CO2 underground storage developments, problems which may be encountered in oil transportation pipeline systems, the Croatian LNG project stages and much more. What is more, the workshop section took place in the Faculty’s Computer Lab using the world known ECLIPSE and PROSPER software packages, where students had an opportunity to run through typical field examples.

 More than 360 participants attended the Conference, with over 50 foreign participants (Padjadjaran University from Indonesia, Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas from Russia, National Mineral Resources University from Russia, AGH University of Science and Technology from Poland, University of Miskolc from Hungary, Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University Of Oil and Gas from Ukraine, Mining University of Leoben from Austria and Technical University of Berlin from Germany). Next to excellent student presentations, forty distinguished lecturers from the industry, two Zagreb Faculties and foreign Universities also held their presentations, shared stories from their extensive experience and encouraged students not to give up on their studies in this harsh period for the industry.

 The Conference was held under the high patronage of the President of the Republic of Croatia, Mrs. Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic and Mayor of Zagreb, Mr. Milan Bandic. The organization of the Conference was financially supported by the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering, SPE Croatian Section, INA d.d., Croatian Hydrocarbon Energy, PSP Okoli d.o.o., PPD d.o.o.. The Basics of Mud Engineering

On 28th of February 2016, we are proud to have Mr Ahmed Alaa Eldin, a drilling fluid engineer from OES Oilfield Services Group who present himself to SPE-UTM Student Chapter to give a talk entitled “The Basics of Mud Engineering”.

In his presentation, he pointed out the function of the mud engineer and also the important role of the mud engineers. He also showed us the main functions of the mud, different type of muds and its component. He also covered about the mud system’s facilities and also some parameters. About to finish his presentation, he gave us some advice to our members and encourage us to be positive to oil and gas industry. It is our honor to have Mr Ahmed Alaa Eldin that day to teach us some knowledge and his experience sharing. His presentation will be summarized as below.

Introduction about the speaker

Mr Ahmed Alaa Eldin is a graduate from Alexandria University. He did his master degree in Geoscience in 2014, Bachelor degree in Geology and Chemistry and also his Advanced Diploma in geophysics in 2012. His path of learning never ends. During this year, he has his DBM (Diploma in Business Management) in Amity University India. He is a Sales Engineer, an aquamaint for water technology in Egypt. He is also a drilling fluids engineer working in the Aramco Field in OES Group.

 

Introduction to Mud Engineering

Mud Engineering is a part of extraction from upstream operations. Mud engineering does not focus on mud only, but it involves in drilling problems too. Mud engineers are responsible to prepare mud that is suitable to solve the drilling problem and to suit the reservoir’s condition. Mud Engineer also responsible for mud logging. He/she has to provide a continuous record of penetration rate, lithology and indicate any hydrocarbon show.

 

The importance of Drilling Fluids

Why we use drilling fluids during the drilling process?

  1. Subsurface pressure control
    Formation zone consists of overburden pressure, mud have a weight, it can keep the subsurface pressure under control
  2. Cutting removal and transport
    When we drilled, we have the solid cuttings, and mud is responsible to remove the cuttings from the borehole and bring it up to the surface
  3. Suspension of solid particles
    When the drilling fluid is static (not moving), mud plays an important role to suspend the solid particle from falling down.
  4. Cooling and lubricating the drill bit and drill string (friction and geothermal gradient)
    We learn about geothermal gradient, as we drill deeper, temperature will increase, mud will be responsible to cool the drill bit and lubricate it to reduce friction
  5. Facilitating the collection of formation data
    The formation data obtain from mud logging is needed to support wireline log data, the return mud acts as a visual analytical tool to determine the presence of gas/oil shows
  6. Controlling corrosion
    By adding some chemical into mud, we can reduce the corrosion to a minimum since mud contain Carbon Oxygen, and water

 

 

Mud Types and its component

There are two types of mud, which is oil based mud and water based mud. Preparing mud is essentially same as cooking. When we cook, we need a recipe; so there is in mud preparation. We need also a recipe that contains the materials and procedure to prepare our mud. Various materials may be added at the surface to change or modify the characteristics of the mud.

 

These are some materials that will be added into the mud:

  1. Weighting agents (usually barite) are added to increase the density of mud, which helps to control subsurface pressure and build the wall cake.
  2. Viscosifying agents (clays and polymers) are added to thicken the mud and increase the hole-cleaning ability by acting as a solid-carrier.
  3. Filtration control chemicals (Starch) are added to control the thickness of the mud cake.
  4. Salts are sometimes added to protect downhole formations or to protect the mud against future contamination, as well as to increase density.
  5. Caustic soda is often added to increase the pH of mud, which improves the performance of dispersants and reduces corrosion.
  6. Preservatives, bactericides, emulsifiers and Temperature extenders may all be added to make other additives work better.
  7. Lost Circulation Materials (LCM) are added to combat lost circulation.
  8. Thinners are added to decrease the viscosity of Mud
  9. H2S Scavengers are added to kill Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) inside the wellbore since H2S is very dangerous
  10. Other mud additives may include lubricants, corrosion inhibitors, Shale Stabilizers and defoamers.

 

Mud System and Solid control equipment

There are two mud tanks on the rig: Active & Reserve. The active mud tank is used to hold the excess mud and mixing operation is done over there. While the reserve mud is used to store the heavy mud for emergencies use.

Shale Shaker
– Fine Solids must be removed, otherwise they will increase the weight of mud, reduce the penetration rate of it and increase circulating equipment wear

Degasser
– removes gas from the mud which could form bubbles

The sequence of the mud discharge system is like this, Shale Shaker at the first, and after that desanders, and then defoamer, and last degasser. Why the degassed will be at the last? This is because gas not only formed in well bore but also results from shale shaker, thus degasser remove gas from shale shaker too, that’s why degasser at the last.

 

Advice from the speaker

As we all know, the current oil market is not in a good condition. Oil price is unpredictable sometimes. Thus, as a student that going to be graduating soon, all of us ought to have a plan for our future. We have to plan very well for every single possibility in the future, because under the bad condition, we may get sudden layoff without any presentiment.

Besides, we need to have our show. We have to increase our visibility in the industry. A student may get a good result or a worker might get a good achievement in a company, but no one else in the industry is known except your employer. So we must expose ourselves to increase your visibility in the industry. Be active and sign up for the account that related to oil and gas, such as LinkedIn, Oilpro, Rigzone and etc.
