ATCE 2017 to highlight digital energy, hydraulic fracturing, unmanned vehicles, and more; host inaugural energy startup competition!

On 9–11 October, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) will again assemble exploration and production (E&P) professionals from around the world for the 2017 Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

A leading technical conference in the upstream oil and gas industry for the past 93 years, ATCE will present current best practices and emerging technologies to attending engineers, scientists, academia, managers and executives. At the same time the conference’s exhibiting companies, which represent more than 50 countries, will feature the latest products and services.

“SPE members and companies know the value and return on investment of meeting and networking at ATCE. There is simply no other event in the industry that brings the level of insights, innovations and technological dialogue covering all things E&P,” said ATCE 2017 General Chairperson Vicki Hollub. “This year’s robust technical offerings and our great new programs, should inspire everyone – from students to more experienced professionals – and generate solutions that can be applied back at the office or in the field.”

This year’s conference received a record 2,521 paper proposal submissions, with close to 400 selected for presentations. The technical sessions, ePosters and panel sessions will cover digital energy, chemicals, hydraulic fracturing, flow assurance, unmanned vehicles, and other timely topics. Anticipated session highlights include:

  • “Driving Sustainable Value From Digital Energy Revolution,” which will present various case studies for showcasing the use of digital automation;
  • “Chemical Oil Enhanced Recovery,” showcasing the current interest in the E&P industry;
  • “Frac Modeling: From Injection Test to Treatment Simulation,” featuring papers ranging from pre-fracturing tests to post-fracturing diagnostics and assessments;
  • “The Smarter Flow Assurance Path Toward Improved Offshore Production Economics,” which explores opportunities for flow assurance to help decrease costs and make offshore more competitive with onshore and unconventional; and
  • “Can Unmanned Vehicles and Robotics Create a Step Change in the Oil Industry,” a special session about new technologies to improve operational efficiency and asset integrity as well as minimize personnel exposure to dangerous environments.

New to ATCE, Startup Village will feature new business-focused table discussions and expert presentations on Tuesday. It also includes the inaugural Energy Startup Competition, in partnership with Rice University. This competition will showcase promising emerging technology companies in the energy sector as they pitch venture capitalists, angel investors, and industry leaders.

“Downturns have traditionally been a catalyst for startups, and ATCE has always embraced this industry’s entrepreneurial spirit. While widely known as the launching pad for new onshore and offshore technologies among leading E&P companies, programs like this equip future oil and gas leaders with the right tools, insights, and networks to turn these business ideas into realities that can benefit the broader industry,” said 2017 SPE President Janeen Judah.

ATCE continues to deliver training courses, special awards recognitions and specialized topics for students and young professionals, such as:

  • 20 pre- and post-conference training courses covering a wide range of industry topics;
  • Its traditional ATCE Annual Reception and Banquet on Tuesday to recognize outstanding SPE members who have made significant contributions to the industry, and the President’s Luncheon and Annual Meeting of Members on Wednesday, where new achievements and upcoming initiatives will be presented.

‘East meets West’ 2017!

‘East meets West’ 2017!

From 4th to 7th of April for the 8th time SPE AGH Chapter was organizing ‘East meets West’ International Student Petroleum Congress and Career Expo. We have gathered around 250 participants representing 26 countries and numerous companies from E&P sector. This year’s edition was special thanks to SPE International which enabled us to host European Qualifier to Student Paper Contest and Petrobowl. It is worth to mention that the winners of above contests will represent European region at ATCE Conference in October in San Antonio, Texas.

The winner of SPC Undergraduate was Wojciech Labuda, from AGH UST with the paper on ‘Profitability calculations of abandoned mine methane production in the Upper Silesian coal basin’. In the Postgraduate category the best was Dongue Dongue Dietrich Kevin representing Imperial College London, with the ‘Study of grid effects on leak-off rate calculation for a numerical fracture propagating model’. The best from PhD’s was Marsha Maraj from London South Bank University presenting the paper on ‘Deriving the pore size distribution of selected reservoir material using a combined microCT and NMR approach’.

Traditionally, we had the Poster Session during which selected students could present the results of their researches and compete in the contest. All the contestants presented a very high substantive level and Yiqun Liu from DTU was announced the winner. Needless to say, emotions were running high during Petrobowl Contest. It gathered 23 teams from Europe and Caspian Region and resulted in 5 teams which will represent this region at ATCE. They were from University of Stavanger, Herriot Watt-, Gubkin-, Leoben University and the best team- AGH UST! Congratulations to all, it was a pleasure to watch you!

Debates are always a very popular point in EMW’a agenda. It was no different this year with „HSE Aspects in Oil & Gas Industry” and „Womens role in modern O&G Industry” debates. The panelists who have taken part were extremely experienced professionals and thank to that the audience could gain knowledge, interact by asking questions and raise a discussion. Both panels showed that the future of our Industry and the situation of women in s.t  is bright despite the crisis.

This Conference though wouldn’t have been such a success if not for the Partnering Companies: MOL Group, Schlumberger, Baker Hughes, EuRoPol GAZ and PGNiG. Their support enabled to organize the Congress, gave students the opportunity to find out about the chances of employment and take part in the recruitment organized by Schlumberger.

This conference is and always has been all about bringing young people together in the center of Europe, creating the environment which will enable them to gain knowledge, exchange experience and develop friendships. Seeing you all there was a true reward for the year of preparations and I hope that our efforts will resulted in fruitful event and great memories. If you haven’t take part in this edition – do not worry, next year we see each other in Krakow with even bigger amount of knowledge and experiences!

IPTC – Education Week

International Petroleum Technology Conference, or popularly known as “IPTC” has been successfully held from 14th to 16th November in Bangkok!! This year, throughout the successful efforts of the organizing committee, the IPTC has attracted more than three thousand audience from 51 countries and 37 companies as exhibitors. This year proud to say that IPTC has come to 10th Edition! As a student, I am proud to be there to join this one of the world’s foremost oil and gas event! Much honorable is that I got the opportunity to join the IPTC Education Week Program!

What is Education Week?

The education week was held from 12th to 16th November with 67 students participated from 47 universities and 29 countries! It is a one week based program where the selected student will have the opportunity to learn and get some exposure to know more about the oil and gas industry through some panel session, experience sharing talk and field trip. Overall Program Experience

On the 1st day of program, we have the welcoming party in which we get to know every student and also the young professional leader. It is a great networking activity where we get to know all the students from different countries and also different cultural backgrounds.  During the 2nd day of the program, we are proud to have the industry executive representatives sharing their expertise with us with the theme of “Innovation and Efficiency Excellence for our energy future”. We have the speaker from PTTEP, Schlumberger, Halliburton, Shell, Baker Hughes, Exxon Mobil, Hess and Mubadala Petroleum. The expertise advised us for not to give up to the oil and gas industry during this downturn. According to them, the energy demand is still on the track of increasing. Therefore, it is still a hope because during that time is our young generation to monopolize the oil and gas industry. The most important point is we have to find the dynamic balance point between the supply and demand. Moreover, the advancement of technology such as the advancement of data processing, renewable energy and (Autonomous underwater vehicle) AUV or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have proved to bring a bright future to us! Quoted from the words of Senior Vice President PTTEP, in order to overcome our business’s challenge, we have to be innovative and efficient in our task. That is why IPTC comes with the theme ”Innovation and Efficiency Excellence for our energy future”.

Apart from that, we have the chance on the 4th day to visit IPTC education booth, technical session and panel session.

On the last day of IPTC Education Week, we have our group presentation in which we present our group works since July 2016. Each group consists of 6 to 7 people from different universities and different background of study, which consists of Petroleum Engineering, Geology, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering and etc. Every group has different topics such as Deep water development, renewable energy, Field development, social license to operate, High Pressure High Temperature and etc. My group got the topic of Social License to Operate. It was a great exposure and learning experience listening to another group presentation. During the preparation of the works, you have the opportunity to know other students from different universities. It is so wonderful to see everyone coming from different universities and cooperate together to get the work done successfully. That’s truly a great experience and great social networking event for students!

Hope to see you again in China 2019!

Last but not least, IPTC Education Week is truly a great experience for students! Opportunity doesn’t wait! Grab the opportunity next IPTC in China 2019. As a student, grab this opportunity and apply through your society, such as SPE, SEG and AAPG, and EAGE. IPTC is a platform to promote knowledge sharing and scientific and technology dissemination on a global scale. (IPTC Home Website). Can’t wait again for the next IPTC! Thank you for the sponsoring bodies, especially PTTEP as the host organization for making the IPTC a success!
